CitationDirector of the Marine Biological Laboratory, Plymouth. Distinguished for his researches in Animal Morphology, and in the Biology of the sea, in particular for his discovery of the means of obtaining pure cultures of plankton. He has been Director of the Marine Biological Association's Laboratories at Plymouth and Lowestoft, and Secretary to the Councils of the Association since January, 1895. From 1902-10 he was responsible for the work done by the Association in connection with the International investigations in the North Sea. Dr Allen was Editor of the 'Journal of the Marine Biological Association' for sixteen years, and has also edited four blue books on the work of the International investigations. The following is a list of his contributions to science: - 'On the Minute Structure of the Gills of 'Palaemonetes varians''; 'Nephridia and Body Cavity of some Decapod Crustacea: I. Some Nerve-elements of the Embryonic Lobster; II. The Stomato-gastric System of Astacus and Homarus; III. On the Beading of Nerve-fibres and on End Swellings; IV. Further Observations on the Nerve Elements of the Embryonic Lobster'; 'The Anatomy of 'Poecilochoetus', Claparede,' - the above papers appeared in the Quart Journ Micros, Sci; 'Report on the Present State of Knowledge with regard to the Habits and Migrations of the Mackerel'; 'On the Fauna and Bottom-Deposits near the 30-fathom Line from the Eddystone Grounds to Start Point'; 'The Fauna of the Salcombe Estuary' (with R A Todd); 'The Fauna of the Exe Estuary' (with R A Todd); 'Plymouth Marine Invertebrate Fauna' (in co-operation with other naturalists); 'Pallasta murata', n sp: A New British Sabellarian'; 'Mackerel and Sunshine'; 'On the Artificial Culture of Marine Plankton Organisms' (with E W Nelson) - the last eight papers appeared in the Journ Marine Biol Assoc; 'Preliminary Account of the Nephridia and Body Cavity of the Larva 'Paloemonetes varians'' 'Some Points in the Histology of the Nervous System of the Embryonic Lobster' - the above two papers appeared in Proc Roy Soc.
