Distinguished for his work on the Botany of Australia and Tasmania. Founder of the important NSW National Herbarium. On behalf of these and the Botanic Gardens (Sydney), the scientific standard of which he has greatly raised, he has travelled extensively and systematically in Australia and Tasmania. Has also visited Great Britain and Europe as a Representative of Government to obtain information with regard to original types of Australian Plants, Forestry and coguate matter. Author of upwards of three hundred works and papers on Pure and Applied Botany amongst which may be cited: - 'A Critical Revision of the Genus Eucalyptus'; 'The Forest Flora of New South Wales'; 'Illustrations of New South Wales Plants'; 'The Flowering Plants and Trees of New South Wales'; 'A Manual of the Grasses of New South Wales'; 'Useful Plants of Australia'; 'Sir Joseph Banks: the Father of Australia.' He has done much in other ways to diffuse a knowledge of botany and to promote the use of Australian Vegetable Products. Has been President of the Royal and of the Linnean Societies of New South Wales, and has been Hon Secretary of the former since 1893. Permanent Hon Secretary of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, and local Secretary of the British Association in Australia, 1914. In 1915 awarded the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London.
