TitleGuppy, Henry Brougham: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationRetired (1885) Surgeon RN. Distinguished for researches in the geology of the Pacific Islands and in the dispersal of seeds; the latter the most considerable investigation of the problem of plant dispersal since that of Darwin. While on the China Station (1877-1880) he determined the amount of sediment carried by the Yangtse; on the Australian Station (1881-1884) he made geological and zoological collections in the Solomon Islands, the latter presented by the Admiralty to the British Museum and worked out there. Author of 'Physical Characters of the Solomon Islanders' (Journ Anthrop Inst, 1885); 'The Solomon Islands and their Natives' (ibid, 1887); 'Recent Calcareous Formations of the Solomon Group' (Trans Roy Soc Edin, 1885); 'Notes on the Character and Mode of Formation of the Coral Reefs of the Solomon Islands' (Proc Roy Soc Edin, 1885-1886); 'The Solomon Islands and their Geology' (ibid, 1887). In 1888 he investigated Keeling Islands. Author of' 'The Cocos-Keeling Islands' (Scot Geogr Mag, 1889); 'Dispersal of Plants as Illustrated by the Flora of the Keeling or Cocos Islands' (Journ Vict Inst, 1889). During 1896-1899 was occupied with geological and botanical researches in Sandwich and Fiji Islands, the results being published in 'Vanna Levu, Fiji, a desciption of its Leading Physical and Geological Characters' (1903); and 'Plant Dispersal' (1906). Has further investigated the subject at home - 'The River Thames as an Agent in Plant Dispersal' (Journ Linn Soc, 1891-1893); 'Studies in Seeds and Fruits' (1912). With the same object he investigated in 1903 and 1904 the littoral flora in Western South America, in 1905 that of the Canary Islands, and in the following years that of the West Indies [Caribbean].
