Citation | Fellow and Lecturer of Trinity College, Cambridge. Formerly (and again temporarily) Chief Assistant at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Has made investigations in mathematical physics, pure mathematics and astronomy. Author of three papers on the 'Kinetic Theory of Gases' (Phil Trans, A Nos 211,216, 217, also Proc Lond Math Soc, Phil Mag, 1917, in which the theory of viscosity, diffusion and conduction is developed for the general monatomic gas. In several papers on 'Terrestrial Magnetism' (Phil Trans, A, Nos 213, 214, 215, and one unpublished, Proc Roy Soc, A, 95, and other) he has developed the theory of the diurnal magnetic variations and of magnetic storms. In pure mathematics he has contributed to 'The Theory of Non-convergent Series and Integrals' (Proc Lond Math Soc, 1910, Math Annalen,1912, Quart Journ Math, 1911-1916). Other papers have dealt with 'Stellar Distribution,' 'The Lunar Tide in the Atmosphere,' and 'The Effect of Magnetism on Chronometers.' |
