Distinguished for his originality and success in the treatment of problems of the atmosphere by the application of mathematical physics. Adams Prize, Cambridge, 1915. He has opened up new effective lines of research by the development of a theory of the diffusion of eddy-motion in various atmospheric conditions, a most important departure in dynamical meteorology. Another subject in which he has been very successful is the study of the phenomena of elasticity by the use of soap films.
