DescriptionDate stamp on reverse. Citation typed
CitationTemp Major, RAF. Fellow of Trinity College (1910). Staff Officer in charge of Meteorological Research, Royal Air Force, 1918. Smith's Prizeman, 1910. Schuster Reader in Dynamical Meteorology for the Meteorological Committee, 1912. Lent to the Board of Trade by the Committee as m Meteorologist on the ss 'Scotia' for research in connexion with ice, 1913; in charge of aeroplane calculations, Royal Aircraft Factory, 1914. Pilot's certificate, 1915; Professor of Meteorology to the Royal Flying Corps, 1916. Distinguished for his originality and success in the treatment of problems of the atmosphere by the application of mathematical physics. Adams Prize, Cambridge, 1915. He has opened up new effective lines of research by the development of a theory of the diffusion of eddy-motion in various atmospheric conditions, a most important departure in dynamical meteorology. Another subject in which he has been very successful is the study of the phenomena of elasticity by the use of soap films. The papers in which these contributions to the advance to knowledge are contained are: - 'Discontinuous Motion in Gases' (Proc Roy Soc, 1910); 'Report of the 'Scotia' Expedition, 1913' (Board of Trade); 'Eddy Motion in the Atmosphere' (Phil Trans, 1915); 'Skin Friction of the Atmosphere' (Proc Roy Soc, 1916-1917); 'Turbulence in the Lower Atmosphere' (ibid); Motion of Solids in Fluids when the Flow is not Irrotational' (ibid); 'Formation of Fog' (QJ Roy Met Soc); 'The Use of Soap Films in Solving Torsion Problems' (with A A Griffiths) (Proc Inst Mech Eng, 1917); also confidential reports on aerodynamics, meteorology and theory of elasticity for the Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.
