CitationProfessor of Experimental Philosophy in the University of Oxford. Distinguished for his knowledge of physics, physical chemistry, and astronomical physics. Has recently worked at Aeronautics (1915-1919), and has communicated numerous reports to the Advisory Committee on Aeronautics, containing results of importance. Among his principal papers are: - 'Uber die Berechnung Molekularer Eigenfrequezen' (Phys Zeit, 1910); 'Untersuchungen uber die Spezifische Warme bei tiefen Temperaturen' (four papers, two with W Nernst, Sitzungsber d Akad d W Berlin, 1910-1912); 'Uber die Berechnungn der Eigen Frequenzen der Elektronen im Selektiven Photoeffekt' (Verh Phys Gesell, 1911); Uber das Dolong-Petitsche Gesetz' (Dissert Berlin, 1911); 'Note on the Theory of the Metallic State' (Phil Mag, 1915); 'Daylight Photography of Stars as a Means of Testing the Equivalence Postulate in the Theory of Relativity' (Roy Ast Soc, 1916); 'Preliminary Note on the Applications of Photo-electric Photometry to Astronomy' (ibid, 1919, with A F Lindemann); 'Note on the Vapour Pressure and Affinity of Isotopes' (Phil Mag, 1919). Also communications to the Advisory Committee on Aeronautics on: - 'The Northerly Turning Error of the Magnetic Compass'; 'Turn Indicator for Use on Aircraft'; 'A Recording Accelerator for Measuring Stresses on Aeroplanes'; 'A Range-finder for Use on Aeroplanes'; 'The Experimental and Mathematical Investigation of Spinning'; 'The Chief Causes of Error in Bomb-dropping from Aeroplanes.'
