His papers have appeared mainly in the Journal of Physiology from 1893 onwards; these describe important discoveries relating to the chemical and physical regulation of the body-temperature in man and animals, the development of temperature-regulation in young and hibernating animals, the cause of Cheyne-Stokes breathing, the alveolar air and blood-gases in diabetic coma, and the physiology of muscular work in man. Joint Author or Editor of several well-known scientific books.
