CitationDistinguished as a pioneer worker in the design and construction of vessels of high speed, including torpedo-boats, destroyers and shallow-draught steamboats; also as the inventor of novel types of steam boilers and machinery used for ship propulsion. His original work has been based on experiments mainly originated by himself. The conduct of these researches have been under his personal direction and have advanced natural knowledge. Amongst the subjects investigated have been: - the resistance of full-sized vessels towed at high speeds; the efficiency of screw propellers; vibration of steamships; the use of electric motors and internal combustion engines for ship propulsion.
