CitationDistinguished for his advancement of scientific forestry through his researches on the sylvicultural requirements of Indian trees on the basis of their botanical characters and environment. The results of his investigations in the laboratory and in the forest, extending over more than 15 years, were published in his book on 'The Sylviculture of Indian Trees' 3 volumes (Clarendon Press, 1921). Author of a number of important memoirs and papers, as well as of text-books dealing with matters pertaining to forestry, and he has an extensive first-hand knowledge of forestry conditions in many countries.
