CitationHas achieved international reputation for his contributions and pioneer work in the theory and constitution of large dynamo electric machinery. Was responsible for the development of the cylindrical type of field magnet for turbo-alternators ('The Design of Turbo Field Magnets for Large Alternators,' Journ Inst Elec Eng, 1910). First suggested and applied the theory of thermal breakdown of electrical machines ('Heat Paths in Electrical Machines,' ibid, 1912). Is the author of many important papers including: 'The Improvement of Power Factor in AC Systems'; 'The Short Circuit Current of Large Electrical Generators'; 'The Predetermination of the Performance of Dynamo Electric Machines.' Has made many inventions including the Phase Advancer and apparatus for acoustic sounding. Is the author of two classical treatises: 'The Specification and Design of Dynamo Electric Machinery'; 'The Diagnosis of Troubles in Electric Machines.'
