TitleThompson, William Robin: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for his researches on biology and anatomy of parasitic Insects. Has applied his great knowledge of insect parasitism to the study of different problems of general biology, resulting in numerous contributions on: (1) inter-relationship between parasites and hosts and the anatomo-histological reactions of the latter; (2) morphogenesis; (3) adaptations; (4) biological races; and (5) host selection by the parasites. He is one of the few biologists who have treated the problem of the inter-relationship between the successive generations of parasites and their hosts mathematically with a view of isolating factors controlling their distribution, and has published important papers on the scientific bases of biological control of insects by their parasites.
