CitationDistinguished in Geodesy. Has made researches in Terrestrial Refraction and into the effect of changes in the earth's axes on deviation of the vertical (Survey of India, Prof Papers 14 and 16). Computed the form of the geoid in India and introduced powerful geoidal method of treating data. Re-determined terrestrial axes and located crustal density anomalies and departures from isostasy in Indian Peninsula. Is a member of the International Longitude Commission and made an important contribution to International Longitude operations. Was scientific Secretary to Lord Kelvin 1904-1905 and Mathematical Advisor to the Survey of India from 1907 until appointed Director.
