TitleRichey, James Ernest: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationLyell Medallist (London Geol Soc 1933). Richey joined Geological Survey 1911, and made many valuable contributions to study of igneous complex of Mull (Loch Ba Ring-dyke, etc). He served throughout War, Western Front (Captain R E). Returning he developed palaeontological stratigraphy and vulcanicity of Scottish Carboniferous, and especially interpretation of plutonic complexes. In this, the most difficult branch of field geology, he stands leading expert, not only in Britain but also in the world. His Survey and Geological Society publications, Ardnamurchan (1930), Mournes (1928), Slieve Gullion (1932) are classic.
