CitationHas carried out important researches on coal and on the products resulting from its carbonisation and combustion, including the investigation of the inorganic constituents of coal, the reactivity of coke, and the constitution of low temperature tar. Initiated and organised the scientific work of the Lancashire and Cheshire Coal Research Association in 1918. The methods developed by him for a Coal Survey formed the basis of the Fuel Research Board Coal Survey, of which he became Superintendent in 1924. As Director of Fuel Research since 1931 has initiated and brought to fruition many investigations of national importance.
