Distinguished for his researches on Australian and New Zealand geology - particularly his studies on the geology and petrology of the Great Serpentine Belt of New South Wales, and his contributions to the knowledge of the spilitic suite and the tectonic conditions accompanying the intrusion of basic and ultra-basic igneous rocks. In New Zealand his researches cover a wide field, and include important papers on the origin of New Zealand land forms, the stratigraphy and Palaeontology of the Ordovician rocks, the tectonics and metamorphism of the crystalline schists of Fiordland, and on the petrology of the volanic field of Duedin.
