TitleRowledge, Arthur John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationMr A J Rowledge was Chief Designer of the Napier Company when their cars were successful in almost every international event, and later was primarily responsible for the Lion areo-engine, the most widely used and generally successful engine of its time. The design was a complete innovation upon established practice, and exhibited a number of highly original and successful features. Mr Rowledge has been for the last 15 years on the staff of Messrs Rolls-Royce, and in this position also has been responsible for mush design work of a creative character. He was closely associated with the successful engines of the Schneider Trophy races. He combines in a remarkable degree a basic knowledge of scientific principles, originality in the conception of his designs, and the mature practical judgment of a mechanical engineer which ensures success.
