Has notably promoted the study of the applications of radioactivity to geological problems (32 papers), especially time-measurement (Monograph, 'Radioactivity and Geological Time', Bull, 80, US Nat Res Council (Lowell Lectures); book, 'The Age of the Earth', and many papers); the earth's thermal history and surface features ['Radioactivity and Thermal History', Parts I-V, 'Radioactivity and Earth Movement' (convection hypothesis)]; and the origin of lead ores. Has also advanced petrology by twenty papers on rocks from the British Isles, Mozambique, Uganda, Angola and the Arctic, and by important contributions on petrogenesis.
