CitationHydrographer of the Royal Navy since 1932; Vice-Admiral. Has rendered great services to geodesy and geophysics in connection with tidal research, gravity and seismic surveying off the British coasts, and particularly by his work for the construction, equipment and programme of the non-magnetic Royal Research Ship 'Research' (launched April, 1939), for the magnetic and electric survey of the oceans. 'Ex-officio' member of the British National Committee for Geodesy and Geophysics, Chairman of the Oceanographic Sub-Committee, Chairman of the Royal Society's Committee on Geophysical Researches off the British Coasts.
