CitationAstronomer Royal for Scotland and Professor of Astronomy in the University of Edinburgh. Formerly Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, and Chief Assistant, Royal Observatory, Greenwich (1924-1938). During these years he took a large share in the general direction of the work of the Royal Observatory, being responsible for the solar and magnetic departments and for the observations with the 26-inch refractor and the 30-inch and 36-inch reflectors. Distinguished for his contributions to stellar spectro-photometry and in particular to the photometry of the continuous spectrum. He was responsible for the planning and general direction of the Greenwich programme of determinations of colour temperatures of stars of early type and for the discussion of the results. He has also made important contributions to the problem of the relationships between magnetic storms and solar activity and to dynamical astronomy.
