Distinguished for his contributions to the metallurgy of steel, especially in applying the laws of chemical equilibrium to the re-actions in the open hearth and electric furnace. He has also made important contributions to the theory of the hardening of steel. His investigations have influenced steel making practice, and he has been instrumental in the re-organisation of steel manufacture in Scotland on a scientific basis.
