TitleDorey, Stanley Fabes: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationAs Chief Engineer Surveyor of Lloyds he has by the application of scientific methods developed a system of assessing and controlling safe working conditions for ships machinery which has won international acceptance. His own researches and those carried out under his directions have been concerned with the failure of Diesel Engine crankshafts, the influence of torsional oscillation and the method of assessing the stress which arises therefrom. The influence of corrosion fatigue on the breakdown of piston rods and of inaccuracies in helical gear teeth on their safety. His critical examination of failures at sea by bringing to light causes of failure directly assisted in their removal.
His investigations and influence materially assisted the adoption of welding as a structural method in producing boilers, machinery, ships parts and the acceptance of welding by insurance companies.
