TitleFarmer, Ernest Harold: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his researches on unsaturated hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and particularly for his investigation of the reactive tendencies of unconjugated polyene substances in non-polar surroundings. His studies of autoxidation and the primary peroxidation mechanism of the polymeric hydrocarbons, vegetable and animal oils, and simple olefins are widely recognised. His elucidation of alpha-methylenic reactivity, and its importance in promoting molecule linking, vulcanisation and non-polar substitution, is especially noteworthy, as also his discovery of the olefin-phenol-formaldehyde reaction. Earlier investigations include the properties of conjugated compounds, the mechanism of low-molecular polymerisation, and the constitution of natural polyene acids.
