CitationSc.D. (Cantab) An outstanding British authority on soil. Director, Soil Survey of England and Wales. In numerous original papers he has elucidated some fundamental principles of soil-genesis and structure, developing therefrom scientific methods of classification, mapping and mechanical analysis, now internationally adopted. His book "Soils: their origin, constitution and classification", the first adequate presentation in English of modern pedology (soil science), has profoundly influenced the thought of investigators and students throughout the world. His authority and wisdom as a teacher and investigator have long been exercised and acknowledged in leadership of national and international soil-science organisations.
