CitationDistinguished for his researches in several branches of Physics, and has been responsible for the development of new electric Discharge Lamps, and other discharge devices. Recently he has carried out, and led, important research and development work in fields, at present secret, for the Services.
In Spectroscopy he discovered conditions in which missing spectra of neural Nitrogen and Carbon appear in arcs (Proceedings, Royal Society, 1927); he also found and analysed new infra-red cyanogens bands. His theoretical studies on Light Scattering (Proceedings, Royal Society, 1932) had important applications and formed basis of International Classification.
He led researches in Thermionics and discovered properties of multi-atomic layers on tungsten.
