TitleYates, Frank: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationHas been since 1933 head of the Statistical Department at Rothamsted, and since his appointment has become the leading authority in this country on two vitally important developments of mathematical statistics, the application of combinatorial mathematics to experimental design, and the theory and practice of sample surveys. The systematic use of partial confounding, and the development of such valuable arrangements as those using lattices and balanced incomplete blocks are especially Yates's doing, but the rapid development of the whole subject and its immediate and fruitful application to problems of plant nutrition, soil infestation, animal feeding, etc., owe much to his energy.
