TitleHughes, Edward David: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his researches on the mechanism and kinetics of organic reactions, particularly in relation to substitution and elimination. Discovered and took prominent part in the establishment of unimolecular substitution and elimination, and in many extensions of these basic observations to allied organic reactions and to specialised kinetic phenomena. Clarified the conditions for the Walden Inversion by kinetic methods. Established for bimolecular halogen exchange by the use of radio-halogens that every molecular act of substitution produces a Walden Inversion. Clarified and refined the concept of Steric Hindrance. Contributed direct evidence on the formation and stability of the nitronium ion, and much concerning its role in nitration. Has published over 80 original papers.
