TitlePugh, Sir William John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished by geological work in Wales; skilful mapping of Ordovician-Silurian rocks for over 30 miles to Bala proved relations between the graptolitic and shelly developments, hitherto obscure, which could only be got by the careful mapping technique he has perfected. For last 10 years this technique and skill have been applied jointly with Jones, to 25-inch mapping of Builth-Llandrindod inlier and have yielded results of outstanding interest and importance. He has impressed many students now abroad and at home with his methods of mapping and field observations and has also taken a heavy share in University administration.
