TitleStephenson, Thomas Alan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his researches in marine zoology. His extensive studies on the anatomy, bionomics and reproduction of sea anemones (Actiniaria) led to a re-classification of the entire group and culminate in his monograph published by the Ray Society. On the Barrier Reef Expedition he did important work on the growth and reproduction of corals. While Professor at Cape Town he organized surveys of the intertidal fauna and flora along the whole coast-line of South Africa. This work makes clear for the first time the nature of the faunistic transition through regions of differing latitude and different oceanic conditions. List of papers appended.
