TitleJames, William Owen: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationJames first worked with Stiles and F.F. Blackman on photosynthesis. At Rothamsted he studied effects of potassium on carbohydrate metabolism and showed its influence on various carbohydrases. At Oxford for nine years, the respiratory system in barley was studied and was shown to conform with the wide spread sequence of phosporylatory glycolysis followed by oxidation by dehydrogenases and metallo-enzymes. The system was characterised by preference for sucrose as substrate and sometimes by ascorbic acid as hydrogen carrier. During the war (Oxford Medicinal Plant Scheme) attention was turned to alkaloid metabolism in Solanaceae. Some of the synthetic stages have been identified and the relation of synthesis to respiration established. This work is in active progress. A list of papers is appended.
