CitationDistinguished for his work on haemoglobin and its derivatives. As a reult of an extensive study of the subject he introduced an entirely new conception of the catabolism of haemoglobin, not through the liberation of haematin and porphyrin, but through the oxidative rupture of the porphyrin ring of the haematin while the latter still forms part of the haemoglobin molecule. The globin linked with iron-biliverdin as its prosthetic group then liberates the biliverdin, which on reduction gives bilirubin, thus accounting for the formation of bile pigments without the appearance of an intermediary highly toxic photosensitising porphyrin. Lemberg's contribution to this subject, which has reached the text books of physiology and biochemistry, forms the foundation of our knowledge of blood metabolism. To Lemberg we owe the discovery of bile pigments in plants forming the prosthetic group of the chromo-proteins (phycoerythrin and phycocyanin) of the red algae; and the identification of oocyanin, the green pigment of birds' eggs, and uteroverdin, the green pigment of dog's placenta, with biliverdin.
