TitleLissmann, Hans Werner: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies on the physiological aspects of animal behaviour. His analysis of the behaviour of Betta splendens is widely recognised as of outstanding importance. He has also made very important and original contributions to the analysis of locomotory mechanisms in a variety of animals, including molluscs, fish and snakes. His detection and study of the electrical impulses emitted by such forms as Gymnarchus, both in the laboratory and under natural conditions has opened up an entirely new field of sensory physiology, and has thrown much light on the origin and significance of electric organs in general.
