TitleKemmer, Nicholas: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the theory of fundamental particles. Following Yukawa's original scalar meson theory he developed the most general form of a meson field theory of nuclear forces. The pseudoscalar theory with pseudoscalar coupling which is currently strongly favoured was one of the possibilities considered and was first put forward by him. HE applied the idea of charge independence to meson theory, and , postulating the existence of a neutral meson which has since been observed, he devised the symmetrical theory which now has strong support from experiment. He also developed the matrix formulation of meson theory with special reference to the particle characteristics of the meson, on which much work on particles of higher spin was subsequently based.
