| Citation | Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry, St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College. Distinguished as a biochemist and particularly for his researches in Immunochemistry. Studied the red-cell adhesion phenomenon and developed a valuable diagnostic test for human trypanosomiasis. His studies on the action of the trypanocidal drug, suramine, on tissue proteins and on enzyme systems gave an explanation for the prolonged prophylactic and trypanocidal effect of this drug. He has contributed to our understanding of the nature of complement and of the specificity of protein antigens and was first to show that the serologically active determinant-structure in iodinated proteins is the 3:5 di-iodo-tyrosine group. A pioneer worker in the development of the use of isotopes in immunochemistry. Studied, with considerable success, the behaviour of antigens & antibodies labelled with various isotopes including radioactive I-131, S-35 and P-32 and the stable isotope N-15 and deuterium. Successfully investigated (1) the fate of these marked antigens after their entry into the body & (2) antigen-antibody reactions. First to synthesise and use radio active mustard gas and nitrogen mustard & show that these materials reacted with the proteins of experimental animals to form immunologically foreign proteins which are responsible for the hypersensitivity which arises when animals and humans are exposed to mustard gas.
