TitleMcMichael, Sir John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationIn a logically ordered sequence of studies carried out over 20 years, he has added greatly to knowledge of the haemodynamics of the circulation.
These studies include the portal circulation, the regulation of the systemic venous pressure and its disturbances in the failing heart, the effects of lung diseases on the circulation, the systematising of the drug treatment of heart failure, and the differentiation of high and low output types of failure.
He has developed the use of a variety of precise methods of studying cardiac output in disease, has established the safety of right atrial catheterisation and applied it to some hitherto intractable problems of heart failure. This work has been the starting point of further critical studies on cardiac response in a variety of disease states.
