TitleWatt, Alexander Stuart: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for outstanding work in Plant Ecology. He was the first to establish the causes of failure in the regeneration of British oakwood on a quantitative basis, and to carry out a thorough and masterly study of the structure and development of native and subspontaneous beechwood with their related plant communities, clearly demonstrating the intricate successional processes involved and the self-regeneration of these woods. Later he made a thorough study of the climate, soils and vegetation of the Breckland including a demonstration of the processes of evolution of the Breck soil types from Chalky Boulder Clay, and a spinal research into the detailed behaviour of the bracken fern in Breck vegetation. His recent work includes studies of the native oakwood at Killarney, and of the Cairngorm arctic-alpine vegetation, He has also made important contributions to the theory of vegetation.
