TitleBirch, Arthur John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished as an organic chemist. Early work on Australian natural products included determination of the constitution of gmelinol and origanene. He then turned his attention to new methods of synthesis of branched long-chain acids and to the alicyclic series in the direction of steroid hormones. These studies included syntheses of cis (underlined)-equilenin, a biologically active nortestosterone, and a method for moving double bonds out of conjugation. Researches on reductions by sodium and liquid ammonia led to useful transitions from the aromatic to alicyclic series in a new way. Extensive work on molecular structure of natural products confirmed the important role of acetic acid in biogenesis. A list of publications is attached (53 additional memoirs, 1953-1957).
