TitleBrian, Percy Wragg: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his many and varied contributions to microbiology and plant pathology. His work with soil-inhabiting fungi not only revealed new antibiotics but has also provided much information about their ecological significance. His discovery that griseofulvin can be introduced systematically into higher plants and protect them against fungal parasites suggested a new approach to the control of plant diseases and stimulated extensive and valuable investigations on the uptake and translocation of antibiotics. Outstanding, too, is his recent study of the action of gibberellic acid on plants, which has culminated in the demonstration that hormones with similar physiological activity occur in higher plants. The methods he developed for producing gibberellic acid in quantity led to its purification and to the determination of its constitution.
