CitationDistinguished for his researches on the movements of water and dissolved substances in lakes. This field of fundamental to the study of biological production and "metabolism" in fresh water. He has studied (a) the nitrogen circulation; (b) the exchange of solutes between water and mud; (c) movements of solutes by eddy diffusion; (d) wind-caused seiches in stratified lakes. In the last field he has demonstrated in Loch Ness and elsewhere the existence of a component due to the earth's rotation. He is amassing very complete physical data from lakes in Europe and America, which should be of value both to oceanographers and limnologists.
