TitleNyholm, Sir Ronald Sydney: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his extensive work on the isolation, structure, physical properties and chemical reactions of complex compounds of the transition metals. Has prepared and studied stable compounds of several new or rare valency states (e.g., Fe IV, Ni III, and Ni IV), and of less usual co-ordination numbers (e.g., five). Has contributed to the ordered development of inorganic structural stereochemistry, extending its factual basis by the establishment of tetrahedral gold (I), octahedral gold (III), and octahedral palladium (II). Has developed the connexion of physical, especially magnetic, properties with structure, valency, and bond-type. In these connexions has studied theoretically the metal-ligand bond and the role therein of d (underlined) orbitals. Has studied the mechanism, and the stereochemistry in relation to mechanism, of ligand replacement in complex compounds.
