TitleSaunders, Sir Owen Alfred: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the engineering sciences of heat transfer and internal combustion engines. His work on heat transfer is basic and outstanding and is largely responsible for the growth of the subject, without which modern developments in furnaces and power plants would not have been possible. During the war, he was the first to succeed in using liquid oxygen injection to improve the altitude performance of fighter engines, and was responsible for the theory and design of ejector thrust exhaust systems for aero engines. He assisted materially in jet engine development particularly in over-coming combustion difficulties.
