TitleEvans, Sir David Gwynne: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationHis investigations in H.pertussis elucidated its pathogenicity mechanisms and demonstrated that a somatic antigen, rather than the capsular antigen or intracellular toxin, is responsible for induction of whooping-cough immunity. His discovery of a phase of resistance preceding the formation of humoral antibodies introduced a new concept into immunology. He has made important contributions to the development of whooping cough prophylaxis.
Systematic studies of Cl welchii toxins showed the importance of lecithinase and antilechithinase in the pathogenesis and control of gas gangrene. He has made notable contributions to the development of biological standards.
