TitleKitching, John Alwyne: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the physiology of Protozoa and to marine ecology. He was the first to provide clear experimental proof of the osmoregulatory function of the contractile vacuole in peritrich ciliates. He has greatly extended this, now classical, work in a series of detailed studies upon the water balance of these organisms. He is now investigating the effects of high hydrostatic pressures upon these phenomena. He has also directed an outstanding series of field studies of the animal and plant communities in the sublittoral zone with special reference to the effects of wave action and currents.
