TitleWain, Ralph Louis: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his investigations on the effect of plant growth substances on the plant, the changes they undergo therein and the relations between chemical constitution and steric configuration of the growth substance and its biological activity. He has also made important studies on mode of action and competitive antagonism. He has shown that beta-oxidation of some of these substances can occur within the tissues of certain plants and by studying the reactions involved, has developed new ideas on selective toxicity. He has made basic studies on systemic fungicides and his investigations on the copper fungicides have greatly contributed to the explanation of their mode of action.
