TitleChatt, Joseph: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date16 March 1961
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationHe is distinguished in particular for his work in two distinct fields. First, in his earlier work on the stereochemistry of arsenic, in which he isolated (a) meso (underlined) and racemic forms of three types of di-arsine derivatives, and (b) geometric isomers of the "folded" arsanthren derivatives. Secondly, his major work on the chemical and physical constitution of co-ordinated metallic compounds, particularly the phosphine, arsine and stibine derivatives of palladium and platinum, and the olefine derivatives of these and other metals. He has developed original theories of the "trans effect" in square planar complexes, and of the bonding in trifluorophosphine complexes. His work shows a rare combination of acute theoretical insight, wide chemical knowledge and great experimental skill, and has given him an international reputation as an outstanding pioneer in the renaissance of modern structural inorganic chemistry.
