CitationDistinguished for major researches on Carboniferous stratigraphy and sedimentation of the north of England. In particular, for his demonstration of Yoredale rhythmic sedimentation, Millstone Grit unconformity, the pre-Namurian age of Cracoe knoll topography and the Mid-Craven Fault, his mapping of synorogenetic structures in the Craven Basin, his associated palaeontological studies on Tetracoralla and on goniatite faunal successions. His views on Carboniferous massif, reef and basin sedimentation of the southern Pennines are widely utilized. His Middle East research concerns the Permian - Lower Cretaceous foreland succession of the Oman peninsula and its thrust relationship to the radiolarian facies; the orogeny of the Qamar area (Oman Mys.); faunal stratigraphy of the Permian of Kurdistan, of the Jurassic of Southern Israel, Oman, and the Hadramaut; studies on Mesozoic stromatoporoids and their affinities with the hydroids.
