Date16 March 1961
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to algebra, and especially to the theory of local rings. He is the foremost authority in this country on the modern methods introduced by Zariski and Weil into the study of abstract algebraic geometry. He has made important contributions to the foundation of the subject, and his contributions to the theory of geometrical local rings have made possible significant advances in our understanding of local properties of algebraic varieties. He is the author of numerous papers, a list of which is attached, of a Cambridge mathematical tract on Ideal Theory, and of a treatise on homological algebra.
