TitleRobertson, Rutherford Ness: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date16 March 1961
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to Plant Physiology particularly on ion accumulation and respiration. Early work, with Turner, demonstrated inhibition by cyanide of salt accumulation and the concomitant salt respiration. Later with Wilkins and other students established a quantitative relation between rate of electron loss in respiration and maximum rate of anion uptake; and by studies of reversible inhibition showed the dependence of both processes on the cytochrome system. More recently has greatly advanced understanding of ionic relations and respiratory activity of plant mitochondria. Concurrently has contributed to understanding of growth and metabolism in plant fruits. Robertson's work is marked by imagination and penetration.
