TitleDitchburn, Robert William: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDitchburn is distinguished by his contributions to physical optics and particularly for his work on optical absorption. The difficult measurements he has made of the continuous absorption coefficients of metal vapours and of atmospheric gases have been of great value for the interpretation of the processes involved as well as providing material for direct application in astrophysics and atmospheric physics. He has also made important contributions to the optics of vision and has recently published a valuable book on "Light". During the post-war period he has built up an effective research laboratory at Reading University.
