TitleHill, Maurice Neville: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the study of the floor of the ocean. Some years ago he was the first to obtain satisfactory seismic records in deep water; this technique has proved of great importance. He has also developed a sea-going proton magnetometer and other instruments. He has led numerous expeditions in Discovery II (underlined) and other ships which have made a major contribution to our rapidly growing knowledge of the ocean floor. He is the leading man in this field in this country and has played a large part in the growth of the subject from a neglected corner of oceanography to one of the major fields of scientific work.
