TitleHolder, Douglas William: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his investigations on boundary-layer separation in transonic and supersonic flow. These have elucidated the conditions under which this phenomenon occurs and led to the first satisfactory methods to prevent separation or to reduce its adverse effects in high-speed flight. His work also led to methods for the prediction of pressure distributions in local regions of supersonic flow and for the design of wing sections to reduce wave drag. He is a recognized authority on the design of wind tunnels and shock tubes, to which he has made many important contributions, e.g., in the use of slotted working sections, and improved schlieren techniques. He is the author or co-author of over 60 papers, several monographs and of a book (with R.C. Pankhurst) on wind-tunnel techniques.
